Die Grumman A-6 Intruder war ein Kampfflugzeug der US-Marine. Die A-6 war zwischen 1960 und 1997 im Dienst.

Die endgültige Angriffsversion der Intruder, im Einsatz ab Dezember 1971, mit verbesserten Navigations- und Angriffssystemen. Die ursprünglich separaten Such- und Feuerleitradar der A-6A wurden durch das AN/APQ-148 Multimodus-Radar ersetzt, und die Bordcomputer gegen ein besseres und verlässlicheres System mit integrierten Schaltkreisen getauscht. Dazu kamen ein neues AN/ASN-92 inertiales Navigationssystem. Ab 1979 wurden nach und nach alle A-6E mit dem AN/AAS-33 TRAM (Target Recognition and Attack, Multi-Sensor) ausgerüstet, einem kleinen gyroskopisch stabilisierten Turm unter der Nase mit FLIR und Laser-Zielbezeichner. Das TRAM wurde durch das neue AN/APQ-156-Radar ergänzt. Der BN konnte TRAM-Bilder und Radardaten für extrem zielgenaue Angriffe verwenden, oder nur mit dem TRAM zielen, ohne das Radar zu verwenden (welches das Ziel möglicherweise hätte warnen können). Mit dem TRAM konnte die Intruder auch völlig autonom lasergelenkte Bomben werfen.
In den 80er und 90er Jahren wurden 34 A-6E einem Kampfwertsteigerungsprogramm unterzogen, damit sie die neuesten Präzisionswaffen einsetzen konnten, darunter AGM-65 Maverick, AGM-84E SLAM und AGM-88 HARM. Sie erhielten außerdem ein neues TACAN sowie ein HUD. Nachdem viele Tragflächen Materialermüdungserscheinungen zeigten, wurden etwa 85 Prozent der Flotte mit neuen Flächen aus Verbundwerkstoffen (Graphit/Epoxy/Titan/Aluminium) ausgestattet die auch größere Tanks enthielten.
Insgesamt gab es 445 Flugzeuge des Typs A-6E, davon 240 Umbauten aus alten A-6A/B/C.

Second VA-36 (U.S. Navy)

Das „Second VA-36“ war ein Angriffsgeschwader (Attack Squadron) der U.S. Navy mit dem Spitznamen „Roadrunners“. Es war das Zweite Geschwader mit der Bezeichnung VA-36. Das Geschwader wurde am 6.März 1987 in NAS Oceana, Virginia, gegründet wo es bis zur Abschaffung beheimatet war. Es flog die A-6E Intruder bis es am 1.April 1994 abgeschafft wurde. Das Geschwader nahm vom 20. Januar-28. Februar 1991 an der Operation Desert Storm (2.Irak-Krieg) teil.

The Grumman A-6 Intruder was a combat aircraft of the US Navy. The A-6 was in service between 1960 and 1997. A-6E The final version of the Intruder attack, in use from December 1971, with improved navigation and attack systems. The A-6A’s original separate search and fire control radars were replaced by the AN / APQ-148 multi-mode radar, replacing the on-board computers with a better and more reliable integrated circuit system. With the TRAM the Intruder was able to throw laser-guided bombs completely autonomously. In the 1980s and 1990s, 34 A-6Es were subjected to a combat enhancement program to use the latest precision weapons, including AGM-65 Maverick, AGM-84E SLAM, and AGM-88 HARM. They also got a new TACAN and a HUD. After many wings showed material fatigue, about 85 percent of the fleet was equipped with new surfaces made of composite materials (graphite / epoxy / titanium / aluminum) which also contained larger tanks.
